Why Downsizing Your Piercing Jewellery Matters (And When to Do It)

If you’ve had a piercing with us recently, you’ve probably attended our impromptu TedTalk regarding downsizing. But what exactly does that mean and why is it such an important step in your healing journey? Let’s break it down.

What Is Downsizing?

When we first pierce you, we use a slightly longer post. This is intentional: it allows room for the natural swelling that happens in those early weeks of healing.

Once the swelling settles, we switch to a shorter post. This is what we call downsizing. It’s a quick and simple appointment where we change the jewellery to something snug and way more comfortable.

Why Is Downsizing So Important?

It prevents irritation. A longer post that moves or wobbles back and forth can keep your piercing in a perpetual state of healing. Downsizing helps stabilise the jewellery so your body can focus on finishing the job.

It speeds up healing. Less movement means less trauma to the piercing channel, which equals a happier, calmer piercing.

It looks and feels better. Once the swelling is gone, that extra few millimetres of post can stick out and catch on hair, towels, and clothes. Downsizing makes everything sit flush and feel way more comfortable.

When Should You Downsize?

Every body heals differently, but most people are ready to downsize 4–12 weeks post-piercing. A good sign you’re ready?

• The swelling has gone down.
• The piercing feels calm (no hot, angry redness).
• A few millimetres of the post is sticking out at the back.

If you’re unsure, don’t worry!  We can help assess it for you.

What If I Don’t Downsize?

Leaving a long post in for too long can cause irritation bumps, prolong healing and make your piercing more prone to getting knocked or caught.

So, while it might feel tempting to leave it as is, trust us. Your future healed piercing will thank you.

Ready to Downsize?

If you think you’re ready, book in for a downsize and we’ll make sure your piercing is sitting snug, healing happily, and here for a good time and a long time.
